Increase Your Impact: The Benefits of 360-Degree Feedback

Feedback, feedback, feedback. As leaders, we are constantly bombarded with the concept of feedback. “Make sure you get some feedback.” “It would be beneficial to seek feedback on that project.” “He is waiting for her feedback.” “They need to work on getting better feedback.” I’ve seen leaders thrive once they have received thorough and constructive leadership feedback. In particular, when feedback is focused on their strengths and development opportunities, leaders tend to grow the most. They get a clear understanding of what they do well, and where they struggle in their leadership. This helps to create strong development plans, and sends leaders on the journey towards growth and improvement.

Leader’s can dramatically improve the quality of their work relationships, their impact on the business, and overall leadership style through accurate and detailed input from others. At Bandelli & Associates, we believe 360-degree feedback is vital to the success of any leader. We partner with our clients to develop qualitative and/or quantitative 360-degree measures that bring clarity and insight to one’s leadership effectiveness. In our work with our clients, we offer two approaches to 360-degree feedback:

Interview-Based – The interview-based 360-degree feedback process involves soliciting input (e.g., strengths, development opportunities, and leadership traits) from a cross-section of work colleagues. Our approach looks to gather data from managers, peers, direct reports, and cross-functional stakeholders to develop a robust snapshot of one’s current leadership style. A strong 360 process should involve 12-15 stakeholders. Going beyond this number tends to produce redundant information. One a 360 has been completed, a development plan and a coaching protocol can be used to leverage the data and help a leader improvement their overall effectiveness.

Survey-Based – The survey-based 360-degree feedback process leverages the Bandelli 360-degree survey tool to generate data across the ten leadership competencies that make for effective leadership. These competencies are universal and indisputable to effective leadership at any level, so they tool provides a great means for reviewing one’s entire leadership repertoire. The survey tool can be used at all levels of the organization, and is quick to set-up and administer. Customized feedback reports are developed, which leverage an aggregate summary of the quantitative scores, and a theme based summary from open-ended questions that can be customized to fit your company’s needs.

360-degree feedback helps leaders grow. There are few developmental processes that surpass its effectiveness in holding the mirror up for any leader. If you want to know how people view you today, and where they would like to see you grow, 360-degree feedback is the appropriate approach to strengthening your capabilities.
